It certainly was not instituted by God.

Slavery was an institutional evil and those who owned slaves were guilty of perpretrating evil, I believe on the grounds I delineated, and on others as well. Even if slave-owners were kindly, they violated God's will in the ways I spoke of in my original post.

Thank you for stopping by the blog.Mark Danielshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18205344762960756655noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3543355.post-1105216555757697912005-01-08T15:35:00.000-05:002005-01-08T15:35:00.000-05:00Slavery doesn't in principle involve most of the t...Slavery doesn't in principle involve most of the things you say it involves. In fact, it was not just regulated by God in the NT but imposed by God in the OT. The difference between slavery and other legitimate things (employment, being subject to a king or other governmental authority, etc.) is a difference of degree and not kind, so you're going to have trouble at the borderline cases anyway, and I think anything that applies to the best conditions of slavery will also apply to most employment situations. American slavery was clearly evil from its outset because of manstealing, but that doesn't mean all slaverowners were evil. Particularly in the south among those who owned few slaves, slaves could have very close friendships with those they worked for and were sometimes treated as part of the family. It's the large plantations where there were truly despicable practices, and other southerners had particularly good relationships with their slaves in a way that northerners didn't with theirs.Jeremy Piercehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03441308872350317672noreply@blogger.com
