She's a Person, Not an Instance of 'Avoidable Suffering'

So says former Washington Post reporter and bureau chief Patricia Bauer in this remarkable essay that appeared in the Post yesterday. Increasingly, it seems, America is becoming an Aryan nation. Read Bauer's powerful words. (Thanks to Wittingshire for leading me to them.)

I thought it was an interesting article.

By the way, last night, as I was driving home from a visit with members from our congregation, I heard a report on NPR. It dealt with the commitment of kids at Wheaton Academy, a high school associated with Wheaton College, to deal with the AIDS epidemic in Africa. They spoke with the chaplain about the project, which was given added energy when Bono spoke about Africa and AIDS at the college. All in all, it was a most complimentary report about how faith in Jesus led to this commitment.

Thanks for dropping by the blog and for your comments.

  2. I've met many individuals with Down's Syndrome, and they aren't suffering. The author of the article is right: we abort such children to make our lives easier, not theirs.

I worked with developmentally challenged people for six years, and reading that article just makes me feel sick to my stomach. I'm glad she wrote it. I hope it changes people's minds. But I'm not optimistic.

The devaluation of human life is one of the most tragic and saddening aspects of our world today.

As far as I can see, the antidote won't come through the political process, but in the spirtual reawakening God wants to set off in us through Jesus Christ.

Thanks for stopping by the blog and for your interesting, heartfelt comments.

    Blessings!
