Although when we lived in Madison, Wisconsin back when I was a newborn, my mother, from Columbus, Ohio, often was asked what part of the South she was from. I don't know if anyone from Wisconsin (or Chi-Town) would think I was a native of their parts.

ReplyDeleteIsn't it interesting how, even in our adult years, though in less pronounced ways, our enunciations, accents, and even word choices are altered by where we live?
I remember hearing Charles Kuralt muse on the fact that when he first went on the road to do his "slice of life" reports from various parts of the country, he expected to go to remote places and find that because of mass media homogenization, distinctive accents had disappeared. He found that not to be the case. Place still matters, it seems...even in this cyber-age.
