Four of us were talking the other day about how hard it is for new musical acts to break through to a mass audience these days. In the past, of course, there were a few media gatekeepers--big record companies, big broadcast networks, and such, who guarded access to audiences. But now, with Internet, satellite networks, and that so yesterday cable TV, there really aren't mass audiences, just narrow bands of small splinter groups of consumers.
The best way for musical artists to "hit paydirt" these days, it seems, isn't to get "airplay," but to get their songs into commercials. Even artists like Paul McCartney, who once made "principled stands" against having their songs featured in advertising, have long since relented. Jon Lajoie gets it and shows it in this funny music video.
