Checkout Haiku

The girl smiles at the
baby clutching her mother
in the checkout line

The child buries her
face into her mother's neck
a ploy to vanish

But then, furtively,
she looks back to find the smile,
fright'ning, attractive

The stranger still smiles,
a clue that all the world is
not so foreboding.
