The style of both the melody to this new TobyMac song, Me Without You, and its accompanying video are similar to those associated with Owl City's Good Time.
But unlike Owl City (Adam Young), Toby McKeehan has been around a long time now, a venerable force in Christian music whose music has routinely crossed over to other music charts.
The LP from which this song is taken, Eye On It, was released this past week and is currently #1 over on iTunes. That's tremendous and, to some, shocking crossover appeal!
Me Without You is an electronica-hip hop ode to the God revealed in Jesus Christ.
I like it. But it's far from TobyMac's best work. In fact, all this past week, at every opportunity--in my car or at home--I've been playing Free at Last, the 1992 release of the rap/hip hop/rock band he led at the time, dcTalk. It is incredible and, I suspect, likely to endure as a classic for long years to come.
I also love McKeehan's earlier solo projects, Momentum and Portable Sounds.
The guy is massively talented and, like Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones, and U2, relentlessly creative. Even when he's not at his best, he still does memorable music!
