Pentecost will be celebrated in Christian churches around the world this coming Sunday, May 23. It commemorates the day, fifty days after Jesus rose from the dead, that the Holy Spirit descended like fire on 120 of Jesus' waiting, praying followers (disciples). As soon as the Spirit came to the disciples, they went out onto the streets of Jerusalem to speak openly about "God's deeds of power."
One thing that made this event so remarkable is that just seven weeks earlier, on the night of Jesus' arrest and crucifixion, many of His most prominent disciples had fled or denied any connection to Jesus. Now, on Pentecost, fortified by the power of God's Spirit, they were openly telling others about Jesus. But that was just one of the things that made this day notable.
More later.
